Dealing with a loss can be hard for us all

It may be especially hard to explain to a person with a learning disability that a friend or family member has passed away.

Everyone's level of understanding can be different but if you're concerned about how to explain a death to someone with a learning disability here are some simple online resources which you may find helpful.

The following guides have been created by the HSC Bereavement Network, Northern Health and Social Care Trust, NHS Wales and Change.

Talk to GriefChat

We know the loss of a loved one affects everyone differently.

Sometimes it can be easier to talk to someone outside of your friends and family about the impact of bereavement on your life.

This is why we offer the GriefChat service for free. By clicking on the GriefChat box in the bottom right corner of this page you can chat directly to a specially trained bereavement counsellor. You can remain anonymous or provide your name, whichever you prefer.

Celebrate their life

Share memories and celebrate the life of your loved one with family and friends by setting up a Tribute Fund.

A Tribute Fund is an online tribute page that you can create and personalise in memory of the loved one you have lost. It’s a special way to remember them and can be filled with memories for years to come.
